“So, why no change after Ramadan?
Don’t understand its Benefits”
***
Sometimes, a person does not change after Ramadan although during Ramadan there was a discernible difference in h/her behaviour, attitude and pattern of worship. There may be a number of reasons why change is not entrenched or lasting within a person after Ramadan has finished such as:
[3] Failing to know the benefit of fasting which is not just feeling hunger and thirst. Ibn Hazm mentions in al-Muhalla: “From Maymun b. Mahran: ‘The least part of fasting is refraining from food and drink’…”[1]
وعن ميمون بن مهران : إن أهون الصوم ترك الطعام والشراب
Thus:
- A person must know and understand that fasting is a means to controlling one’s urges, desires and passions – it is a preventative measure.
- Fasting is a way to instill discipline and restraint in actions in order to modify behaviour.
- Fasting is a way of drawing closer to Allah through making one submit to Allah’s orders and commands.
