Q & A Wudu' and Purity

Q & A: “Wudu and sleep…”

Q. When does wudu break sleeping?

A few points need clarifying here. Contrary to misconceptions, sleeping itself is not something that invalidates wudu’[1]but with other conditions can invalidate it, e.g. if a person sleeps such that h/her limbs are fully relaxed so there is no way of being certain whether gas was passed during that time.[2] If one sleeps in a position where the bottom or rear part is firmly pressed or rooted on the ground or any object/space (e.g. a sofa, chair, settee, platform, etc.) then the wudu’ will not be invalidated but in any other position such as reclining on one’s side or lying down straight will invalidate it. In al-Muhit al-Burhani of Mahmud al-Bukhari it has:

“If one sleeps in a sitting posture with his buttocks firmly on the ground, his wudu’ will not be invalidated. If he sleeps while sitting on a level platform but leaning upon a wall or a pillar (ustuwana), then Shams al-A’imma al-Halwani (Allah have mercy on him) stated that the most predominant position (zahir al-madhhab) of the School is that it does not invalidate the wudu’…”[3]

And Allah knows best.
