Q & A Wudu' and Purity

Q & A: “women washing hair and frequent sex…”

Q. My wife suffers from severe migraines and she has serious chances of falling ill if she has to keep washing her hair for the ghusal because we have sex alot. What does she do in this situation especially during the winter time when its really cold. Thanks bro.

One of the obligatory aspects (fard) of the full ritual bath (ghusl) is washing the hair completely and hence must be fulfilled. However, to make matters easy, if the extended marital relations are fulfilled at night, then one ritual bath (ghusl) would suffice for each instance. However, it is well documented within the Hanafi School that a women is granted latitude in this particular case. She is permitted to merely wipe her head instead of the full wash if she fears falling ill or fears increasing her suffering, exacerbating and escalating her illness and as a result withholds herself from her husband. Imam Ibn `Abidin states the following:

“Regarding his statement: (and does not withhold herself) meaning out of fear of the obligatory aspects of the ghusl she has to fulfil if he [desires] sex with her because of his right to do so. In this she has the choice of not washing her hair…”[1]

قوله ( ولا تمنع نفسها ) أي خوفا من وجوب الغسل عليها إذا وطهئا لأنه حقه ولها مندوحة عن غسل رأسها

And Allah knows best.
