Q & A Wudu' and Purity

Q & A: “Ink on the hand and wudu…”

INK ON THE HAND AND WUDU

Q. Salam *** a brother said he had ink on his hand and it stained and was asking what the Hanafis say regarding whether his wudu will still be valid. Jzk

A.

As far as I am aware, anything that prevents water from reaching the skin would mean the wudu’ is invalid until that barrier is removed or eliminated. Of course, different inks have different levels or strengths of resistance so ball point inks are not the same as pigmented ink or indelible inks, etc. If the ink on his hand is from normal pens like ball points then it is porous or permeable (i.e. allows water to filter through it) and wudu’ will be valid. In the Maraqi al-Falah it has:

Whatever thing prevents water from reaching the body like paste or dough or wax or secretions from the eye that solidify and prevent anything entering then one must – i.e. he is obligated to – wash it after removing it…”[1]

(ما) أي شيء (يمنع الماء) أن يصل إلى الجسد (كعجين) وشمع ورمص بخارج العين بتغميضها (وجب) أي افترض (غسل ما تحته) بعد إزالة المانع

And Allah knows best.
