Q & A Wudu' and Purity

Q & A: “Touching books of hadith and wudu…”

Q. Salam bro, our books have fiqh sections and tafseer sections with the Arabic verses do we have to have wudu to read those areas and touch them? Also, what about books of hadeeth, do we have to have wudu for them as well?

According to a known position in the School of Imam Abu Hanifa (ra): i) it is not permitted to touch the Qur’an without performing wudu’ (‘ritual ablution’); ii) it is not permitted (or extremely disliked)[1] to even touch a translation of the Qur’an without wudu’;[2] iii) if the fiqh text, tafsir text or hadith text has more Qur’anic than non-Qur’anic material, then wudu’ would be required otherwise not and iv) it is highly recommended (mandub) to perform wudu’ before reading books of law, doctrine and hadith, known as al-kutub al-shar`iyya (‘Islamic books’), out of respect (ta`zim) for them.[3]

And Allah knows best.

[1] Ibn al-Nizam et al, al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya, vol.1, p.39:

“If the Qur’an is written in the Persian language it is disliked to touch it according to Abu Hanifa and likewise according to [Abu Yusuf and al-Shaybani] according to the most correct position as mentioned in al-Khulasa…”

[2] al-Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah, p.82:

“…even if it is in the Persian Language it is not permitted to touch it by agreement according to the correct position…”

[3] al-Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah, p.82:

“… (and) part (three) is that wudu’ (is recommended) in many situations such as touching shari`a books; there being dispensation for the muhaddith to touch it except tafsir works. His statement (like touching shari`a books) like fiqh, hadith, `aqa’id etc. in this case purification is made out of respect for them…”
