SHAVING AND WAXING AGAIN
Q. Someone said that waxing is absolutely haraam because he asked a scholar and he said it was not allowed as it is like changing the creation of Allah. What do you think?
I’m not a scholar but the opinion as far as I know in the school of Imam Abu Hanifa (may Allah be pleased with him) is that it is permitted but perhaps with dislike (karaha) as mentioned in one place in al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya:
“…and in shaving the chest and back hair is abandoning etiquette as mentioned in al-Qaniyya but if one treats the pubic area with a depilatory agent it is permitted as mentioned in al-Ghara’ib …”
وفي حلق شعر الصدر والظهر ترك الأدب كذا في القنية ولو عالج بالنورة في العانة يجوز كذا في الغرائب …
I’m not too sure if waxing or shaving is changing the creation of Allah. If it was considered that severe then I’m sure the Hanafi jurists would have mentioned that point and thus declared the action haram (‘unlawful’). Nevertheless, it is not a requirement neither is it recommended hence if one so wishes then they may without blame wax themselves. This also includes shaving or waxing of the legs and the permissibility of another to apply the shaving or waxing procedure.
And Allah knows best.
