Q & A Wudu' and Purity

Q & A: “Nail polish and wudu…”

Q. is nail-polish halal and is it allowed tp [sic] pray with it?

I believe that if the nail-polish does not contain unlawful constituents, it is permitted. As for performing the salah with it on, then it would not be permitted because it would fail to fulfil a condition of wudu’, namely: if a barrier prevents water from reaching the body or skin, then unless that barrier is removed, wudu’ will be invalid. In the Maraqi al-Falah it has:

Whatever thing prevents water from reaching the body like paste or dough or wax or secretions from the eye that solidify and prevent anything entering then one must – i.e. he is obligated to – wash it after removing it…”[1]

(ما) أي شيء (يمنع الماء) أن يصل إلى الجسد (كعجين) وشمع ورمص بخارج العين بتغميضها (وجب) أي افترض (غسل ما تحته) بعد إزالة المانع

Nail-polish contains film forming agents, resins and plasticizers, solvents, and coloring agents that form an adhesive sticking to the nails. This becomes a barrier that prevents water (i.e. it is impermeable). Thus, for prayer purposes, nail-polish cannot be worn. It may be worn after completion of the Prayer.

And Allah knows best.
