Q. How to dispose of old Qur’an pages and unreadable Qur’ans?
The best course of action for unreadable, torn, ripped and loose Qur’an pages is to wrap and then bury them in a place where people do not normally walk over. Unable to do this, one can burn the pages. This would be permitted. One could also place them in the water, e.g. a local river or a stream. In al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya it mentions:
“If a mushaf becomes worn and unable to be read and one fears it will be wasted, ruined or lost, then one can place it in the fire or bury it. However, burying it is better than merely putting it in a place where impurities are likely to fall on it or something like it…”
المصحف إذا صار خلقا لا يقرأ منه ويخاف أن يضيع يجعل في خرقة طاهرة ويدفن ودفنه أولى من وضعه موضعا يخاف أن تقع عليه النجاسة أو نحو ذلك
And Allah knows best.
