The Pleasure of Allah and Displeasure of People

The Pleasure of Allah and the Displeasure of People

  • For the believer, the pleasure of Allah is the highest pleasure.
  • Imam al-Mawardi states in his tafsir of the verse: {Among men is he who sells himself to seek the pleasure of Allah; and Allah is Affectionate to the servants [al-Baqara:207]}:

قوله تعالى: {وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يَشْرِي نَفْسَهُ ابْتِغَآءَ مَرْضَاتِ اللهِ} يشري نفسه أي يبيع، كما قال تعالى:{ وَشَرَوهُ بثَمَنٍ بَخْسٍ } [يوسف: 20] أي باعوه، قال الحسن البصري: العمل الذي باع به نفسه الجهاد في سبيل الله

“Allah’s saying: {and there are those who trade themselves to seek the pleasure of Allah}, the word ‘yashri’ means ‘to sell and trade themselves’ like how Allah says {they sold him for a cheap price [Yusuf:20]}, i.e. traded him. Al-Hasan al-Basri said: ‘the action that a person has sold himself for is jihad in the way of Allah’…” [al-Mawardi, al-Nukat wa ’l-`Uyun, 1:266-267].

  • Thus, the da`wa carrier should be someone who has sold himself to Allah in order to gain the pleasure of Allah – the most priceless exchange.
  • Allah demands from us to obey, follow and implement His Law. This gains His pleasure.
  • The only way to ensure the implementation of the Islamic laws is to establish the Khilafah.
  • The obligation to re-establish the Khilafah requires us to work for it.
  • The ummah must be reminded of this obligation; she needs it in order to safeguard her lands, people, resources and religion.
  • Some of the styles of action to arouse attention for the Ummah for the need to restore this khilafah is demonstrations/marches, protests, talks, conferences, etc.
  • Many are trying to thwart this work.
  • Many are trying to stop this work.
  • Many are trying to stigmatise this work.
  • Many are trying to claim this work is futile.

We must ignore these claims.

  • We seek the pleasure of Allah and we leave the results in the Hand of Allah.

Hadith

من التمس رضى الله بسخط الناس رضي الله عنه وأرضى الناس عنه ومن التمس رضا الناس بسخط الله سخط الله عليه وأسخط عليه الناس

“Whoever seeks the pleasure of Allah though it displeases the people, then Allah becomes pleased with him and He will make the people pleased with him. Whoever seeks the pleasure of the people and it displeases Allah, then Allah becomes displeased with him and will make the people displeased with him.” (al-Mundhiri, al-Targhib wa’l-Tarhib, 3:208 and al-`Iraqi, al-Mughni `an Haml al-Asfar, 4:68).

***

  • Even though the people hate it and are displeased with it, we never act to please people over Allah otherwise we will be disgraced by Allah.
  • Allah can make people like us or dislike us – thus He holds the power of affecting results.
  • Allah alone can secure the results but he requires us to work. We do the actions and leave it to Him.
  • We have firm conviction in this.
  • How can we think results and overall effects are in the hands of people? How can we think people have priority over Allah in power and effect? impossible.

So, let us be reminded that we have a duty to call to Islam and to the establishment of Islam and it is only Allah’s pleasure we seek in doing this.
